Surely by now someone's told you to eat more fish—maybe your doctor, who's looking out for your heart. But shopping at the seafood counter more often can also protect your prostate—if you buy the right kinds of fish. In a Swedish study that followed more than 6,000 men for 30 years, those who ate moderate amounts of fatty fish—rich in omega-3 fatty acids—lowered their risk of prostate cancer by 30 percent, while non–fish eaters had a two- to threefold higher risk of developing it. Note: Try to get your essential fatty acids from your plate, not a pill. So far, research shows prostate protection from eating fish, but not from taking fish-oil supplements.

Aim for:
Three 90- to 125-gram (3- to 4-ounce) servings of fatty fish a week. If you've already been diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer, eating even two fish meals a week may lower the risk of further cancer growth by 17 percent.
