Green tea
In test-tube studies, a powerful compound ingreen tea called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) blocks many processes involved with cancer development and growth. Population studies suggest it may protect against several cancers, including those of the prostate, stomach, colon and breast. Some research has found no benefit for people with cancer. But one Chinese study found that men who drank more than three cups of tea a day (almost all of it green tea) dropped their risk of prostate cancer by over 70 percent. Those who consumed the most green tea had about 85 percent less risk than those who consumed the least. More research is under way, so stay tuned.
Aim for: Two to four cups a day if you enjoy the light flavor of this delicate tea, which is also rich in antioxidants.
