2. Refuse food with a smile and a compliment
When you must decline food that a relative or friend has lovingly prepared, make it clear to the cook or baker that you are not rejecting her—you are just sidestepping a food that doesn't fit into your meal plan. How can you keep from hurting her feelings? Say "no thanks" wistfully, then tell her how delicious her cake looks. You might even tell her you'd love to pass the recipe along to a friend who loves coconut cake, or ask questions about her technique. She'll soon be so flattered that she'll forget you haven't had a bite!
