Studies suggest that people who drink alcohol in moderation (no more than two standard drinks a day, for both men and women, with food) get a double cholesterol benefit. In one study, one drink a day lowered LDL nearly eight points. Drinking moderately also increases HDL; in one Dutch study, HDL rose by a respectable seven percent.
